Green Iglu is very excited to be partnering with the LEAP Pecaut Centre for Social Impact once again as part of their Healthy Futures accelerator.
Green Iglu first partnered with LEAP as part of the Google Impact Challenge in 2017. At the time, we were a very young organization composed of student volunteers and recent university graduates. LEAP’s efforts in helping identifying challenges, organizing convenings, and providing coaching and on-going support allowed for Green Iglu to transition into a more streamlined organization.
The funding, coaching, and resources gained from LEAP and the Google Impact Challenge allowed for Green Iglu to expand to its second community, Arviat, Nunavut. A double-dome system was constructed in Summer 2018, making it the largest greenhouse production facility in Nunavut. Additionally, LEAP and its partners provided ongoing support and mentorship as Green Iglu made its transition from a non-profit organization into a registered charity.
Now, the Healthy Futures Accelerator will bring together 11 organizations across Canada to scale their combined impact to improve the lives of over two million Canadians annually. Green Iglu’s goal for this accelerator is to build upon the foundation that we have established with the help of our partners and expand our model to even more communities across the country. With the pandemic causing even more uncertainty in our supply chains, strengthening food sovereignty in remote communities has never been more crucial, and Green Iglu’s Growing Dome model combined with horticulture education and training will be an important piece to reaching that goal.
With over 70 communities already interested in utilizing our growing technology and educational programming, there is a lot of work ahead, but we couldn’t ask for a better partner to help us reach these goals!
