The education programming

we provide here at Green Iglu is at the very heart of what we do and why we do it. By providing support and knowledge for Partner Communities, we are tackling the issues of food insecurity head-on.

Overview

Each module consists of 13 units ranging from basic Plant Biology to Advanced Hydroponics. The first module provides basic knowledge, which is built upon in the following modules. Participants will have the opportunity to experience plenty of hands-on learning as well as more traditional lecture-type education, which we believe will appeal to a variety of learning styles.

Within the education materials, we now provide information on additional ways to use your Growing Dome® or our Cold Acre unit, including composting, growing mushrooms, chickens and cultural space creation. We look forward to leading you through the journey of multiple growing methods from cold frames and soil beds to dutch bucket systems and hydroponics!

On-site Green Iglu Technicians will guide you through the process, providing a clear lesson framework and activities to involve community members.

Purpose

We want to provide you with every tool necessary to reach the goals of your project. We believe that we can continually learn and teach one another, so our education content is always evolving.

Audience

The education materials are written at a Grade 4 English reading level. This reduces learning barriers for all ages and leads to multiple generations engaging with each community’s food sovereignty project.

Delivery

You will receive the content as downloadable PDF files, which you may print out for classroom use and personal use in the community greenhouse or any garden. You may also access and view the materials digitally!

Green Iglu is a not-for-profit organization that launched in 2015 and became a registered charity in 2019. We build greenhouse infrastructure and offer remote communities tailored training that embraces culture, working towards food sovereignty in Canada. Food Insecurity in Canada

Canada is a high-tech industrial society with one of the highest standards of living in the world. However, there is a very different picture that is painted for many people living in remote communities across the country. Many people in Canada do not enjoy the basic necessities that others may take for granted – access to affordable, nutritious, and fresh food.

Food insecurity in Canada is an issue deeply intertwined with the health and economic well-being of families. We were stunned to learn that 1 in 8 households in Canada is without reliable access to a sufficient amount of food. 72% of children in Northern Canada face this problem every single day. It is a systemic issue, a product of how food is grown, supplied, and transported to remote communities. In the Northern regions in particular, the higher food costs are a result of limited access to year-round rail, road, or marine supply lines.
