Our organization is currently seeking a build technician to help with the construction of greenhouse installations, and to ensure that the greenhouse infrastructure(s) installed run smoothly. The goal is to make sure that the community we work with have the knowledge and confidence to operate these projects on their own in the most sustainable manner possible. 

The position will be reporting to the project manager in charge of the specific build.

Job Type 

This is a seasonal, full-time position. The position involves hours that may vary week to week depending if the build technician is in a remote community, traveling to a community, or preparing remotely for the next build. This is a paid position ($22-30 per hour, based on experience) plus travel, per diems, and safety gear expenses.

Period 

The position will be from April to the end of October, 2023 traveling to builds 2-3 weeks on at a time, 1-2 weeks off. Starting time is flexible and there is a possibility for employment to be extended. For students, the position can also start and end in correlation with September school time.

Responsibilities

1. The main focus of this role is to be on-site for Green Iglu project builds and help facilitate the external and internal build setup of the greenhouse(s), while teaching community members the basics of tool use, build plans and working in a safe manner.
2. Greenhouse technicians will help alongside the build technician and assist with the internal setup of the greenhouse(s).
3. Communicate with the project manager to go over a clear and concise work plan; for each day on build.
4. Report daily back to the specific assigned project manager of the build; to troubleshoot 
5. Ability to work with people of varying backgrounds and skill sets, to clearly communicate goals and plans.
6. Comfortable with travel to Canadian remote communities for up to 1-2 days travel time and remain on site for 2-3 weeks. 

Qualifications / Characteristics

• No less than 2 years experience working in carpentry, capability of building greenhouses, planter boxes and other structures by following plans
• Be able to clearly articulate and educate others on this skill, in a respectful manner  
• Experience with basic hand tools, impact drill, circular saw, etc. is required
• Ensure all workers are following Canadian safety codes and procedures
• Interest in working in remote communities.
• Experience working with diverse groups of people.
• Excellent communication skills
• Be able to think on your feet and be able to work independently.
• Pass vulnerable sector check.
• Hold a class 5 drivers license.
• Due to the regulations in many of the communities, you must be double vaccinated against COVID 19, and willing to follow any community health and safety protocols.

Additional duties will include:

• You will be required to be working away from home as the communities will be based across Canada.
• Join in on our weekly meetings to give updates on the work that is being done. 
• Expected to undertake professional development guided by Green Iglu during the work period.
• Produce reports on work done in the community.
• Complete an OHSA online program and follow all safety policies and procedures.
