I was born and raised on a prairie farm and while I have lived my adult life in the city of Red Deer, I have always loved and appreciated nature. Recently, I have been learning more about just how interconnected all things are. This is incredibly fascinating to me and the more I learn, the more I am convinced that nature truly is the best medicine and teacher for us all.
I love growing food and flowers and being in the gardens reminds me just how much humans need nature and how we really are a reflection of it. While life is often overwhelming and seems complex, it is in the garden that we see it really can be very simple. Some of us need full sun to bloom, while others would shrivel and dry up. Some plants are meant to be showy and bold, others are quietly unassuming and yet fill their little nooks perfectly. Like plants, humans need some TLC, a little place to put down roots, and some good company to thrive.
I love seeing the interconnectedness of nature in my gardens and I especially love seeing how the Green Iglu team works together for the common goal of increasing food security and sovereignty for the communities we are working with.
I hope to be able to provide some support and building blocks for the communities to keep pushing their growing season and to maximize the produce from their greenhouses. I believe that when we grow our own food it inherently becomes more valuable to us. This leads to re-evaluating how we care for ourselves, our land and our community. Not only is growing your own food very rewarding but also incredibly empowering. I believe that as communities move towards food security and have the freedom and ability to grow and produce food; not only will they sustain themselves, but they will begin to grow and thrive in new and exciting ways.
